Gate installation and custom wood gates
We build and hang custom wooden gates: garden gates, side-yard gates, entry gates and double gates for wide openings, made to fit the opening and to match your fence.
Gates are built to move
A gate has to look right and swing right for years. That depends on a frame built to resist sag, posts strong enough to carry the weight, and hardware sized for the width.
We build gates for new fences, and new gates for existing fences where the old one is gone or never existed.
Gates we build
- Side-yard gates that match the fence
- Front entry and garden gates with a more finished design
- Double gates for wide openings, trailers or equipment access
- Gates added to an existing fence
- Privacy gates with no see-through gaps
Gate styles
Matching fence gate
Same boards, height and top line as the fence, so the gate almost disappears into it.
Framed entry gate
A visible frame with infill boards, for a front path or garden where the gate is a feature.
Horizontal-slat gate
Slats run across a hidden frame. Pairs with horizontal fences and modern houses.
Arched or stepped top
A curved or stepped top rail that marks an entrance.
Double gates
Two leaves for wide openings, with a drop rod holding the inactive side.
Posts carry the gate
A gate hangs off one post and closes against another. All of its weight, plus the leverage of its width, pulls on the hinge post every day. A post that is fine for a fence panel can be too light for a gate.
We check that existing posts are plumb, solid at the base and big enough for the gate planned. Where they are not, we set new gate posts and footings sized for the load before building the gate.
Built to stay square
- Cedar keeps a gate light and stable, which matters because every kilogram hangs from the hinges.
- Frame type decides how well a gate resists sag. A full frame with a correctly angled brace outlasts a simple Z-frame on wider gates.
- Clearance under the gate is set for the ground it swings over, so it does not catch on a slope or a raised path.
- End grain on boards and frame is sealed, so the gate takes on less water in winter and moves less.
Hardware
Hardware should be galvanized, stainless or powder-coated steel, and rated for the gate size.
Hinges
Long strap hinges or heavy-duty hinges that spread the load along the frame.
Latches
Gravity, thumb or lockable latches, positioned at a height you can reach from both sides if needed.
Self-closing hinges
Pull the gate shut behind you, useful for pets and children.
Drop rods and stops
Hold one leaf of a double gate fixed and stop gates swinging past the post.
Single gate or double gate?
- A single gate suits walkways and side yards. The wider it gets, the heavier the frame and hardware it needs.
- Double gates suit wide openings, because each leaf is shorter and puts less load on its post.
Already have a gate?
If your gate sags, sticks or will not latch, start with gate repair: it may only need new hardware or bracing. If you want a new design in the same opening, it is a new gate and belongs here.
What affects the price of a gate
We do not publish fixed prices because every job differs. These are the main factors:
- Width and height of the opening
- Single or double gate
- Board style and frame design
- Hardware chosen
- Whether new posts are needed
Limits
- We build wooden gates. Metal and automated driveway gates need a specialist.
- Gates in pool enclosures must meet specific safety rules. Tell us if your gate is part of one.

Custom gates questions
How wide can a single wooden gate be?
Wider gates are possible with a heavier frame, stronger posts and bigger hinges, but every extra bit of width adds leverage on the hinge post. For wide openings, a pair of gates usually performs better.
Can a new gate match my existing fence?
Usually, yes. We match the board style and height where the material is still available. New cedar will look lighter than an older fence until it weathers or is stained.
Can the gate lock?
Yes. We fit latches that take a padlock, or keyed and self-closing hardware where you need it.
